Ouestrail is the clothing range of OUEST ACTIVE, in Bruz, just south of Rennes. Brittany is wet, windy and mild, and it rarely commits to any of the three for a whole afternoon. That is an unglamorous climate to design for, and it is the reason this range exists in the shape it does.
The company has sold clothing since 2006. Ouestrail is what happens when the people doing that get tired of watching customers buy three sets of kit for what is, physically, the same weather.
the one idea
A layering system is not three wardrobes. A base layer that works on a climb works on a bike and works under a jacket at a desk — unless the cut stops it. So the whole catalogue is organised by layer rather than by activity, and every piece publishes a grade for all three places it might be worn, with the reason for the grade.
The grades are the product. Anyone can say a garment is versatile. Publishing not advised for cycling, because a zip line across the thigh sits under a pedalling knee is a different kind of claim, and it is the only kind we are interested in making.

four things we decided not to do
01
sell protective equipment
Helmets and certified high-visibility clothing sit under a regulation that demands certification we have not sought. So we sell none of it, and we say so on every page where reflective trim appears.

print a temperature on a jacket
There is no standard that would make the number mean anything. We print fabric weight and fill weight instead, and let the planner do the arithmetic.
03
claim a shell keeps rain out
Our shells are water-repellent, which is a finish, and a finish wears out. We publish which finish, how long it lasts, and how to tell when it has gone.
04
run a subscription
No membership, no monthly box, no points. You buy a garment, we send it, that is the whole relationship until you need something else.
