trail shell hooded
The full-feature trail shell: helmet-free hood, pit zips, taped hem, reinforced shoulders.
three places, three grades
a grade with no reason is not a grade
- hikingsuitable
- Reinforced shoulders take a pack all day; pit zips and a two-way hem zip cover the venting range of a real climb.
- cyclingusable
- Cut generously for layers, so it catches air at speed; the hood has no rear volume adjuster for a riding position.
- commutingusable
- More jacket than a commute needs — the reinforcement panels read as outdoor kit in an office.
Cycling grades account for back hem length, sleeve length with your arms forward on the bars, and whether there is a rear pocket you can reach. Rear pocket on this piece: no.

the piece
The shell for long days out. Reinforced shoulder and forearm panels where a pack and a hedge do their damage, deep pit zips, and a hood cut for a head rather than for equipment. Water-repellent, with the same honest limit as everything else here.
what it does, and where it stops
how we test- fabric weight
- 118 g/m²
- garment weight
- 452 g in EU 50 / M
- packed volume
- 1.2 L
- water repellency
- reinforced — PFC-free DWR, C0 chemistry, applied to the face fabric
- when the finish runs out
- 20 to 30 machine washes, sooner where a pack or saddle rubs
- how you will know
- water stops beading and rolls into the weave instead; the face fabric darkens where it soaks in
- how to renew it
- Wash it clean first, then apply a wash-in or spray-on repellent, then reactivate with a warm tumble dry or a warm iron through a cloth.
- hydrostatic resistance (EN ISO 811)
- Not published.
- breathability (EN ISO 11092)
- Not published.
Measured stuffed into its own pocket and compressed by hand — not a machine-compressed figure.
Sheds a shower and wind-driven spray. It is not a rain barrier: in steady rain the face fabric wets out and water reaches the layer underneath, first at the shoulders and the seat.
Not measured. This garment is water-repellent only, so no hydrostatic figure is published for it.
Not yet measured. No breathability figure is published and no breathability claim is made until it is measured to this standard.
- 210-denier reinforcement at the shoulder yoke and the outer forearm
- Finish: PFC-free DWR; renew after roughly 20 to 30 washes or when water stops beading
- Hood is cut for a bare head — it is not sized over protective headwear of any kind
- 35 cm pit zips, two-way hem zip, storm flap over the main zip

Garment measurements in centimetres, taken flat. Tolerance ±1 cm — a run of fabric is never exact, and we would rather print the tolerance than pretend it away.

environmental characteristics
- Coated face fabric — sort as textile, not as plastic packaging
- Finish is a surface treatment, not a laminate, so the base cloth stays a single fibre family
- Zips and pullers are replaceable rather than bonded
Textiles have been covered by the French Triman and sorting-information rules since 1 February 2023. Full sorting instructions
honest reviews
We publish reviews from verified purchases only, and we do not filter out the critical ones. This piece has not been out long enough to have any yet — when it does, they will appear here unedited, with the size bought next to each one.
